Guide to Jacksonville’s Best Parks, Attractions, and Outdoor Weekend Adventures

Hey friends — if you’re looking for ideas to get outside this weekend, here are some of my favorite parks, trails, and spots in and around Jacksonville that deliver everything from sunshine and surf to quiet woods and wildlife escapes.

Parks & Preserves You’ll Love

Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park

Located on the Atlantic coast, Hanna Park is one of the rare places where you can mix beach time, hiking, and camping all in one visit. Expect miles of trails through oak hammocks, a lake for paddleboarding and fishing, and sandy beach access. It’s also dog-friendly on the beach side — perfect for bringing the pup along.

Betz-Tiger Point Preserve

This 525-acre preserve is a hidden gem in nature lovers’ terms. Pine flatwoods, salt marshes, and maritime forest combine with kayak launches, multi-use trails, fishing spots, and chances to see animals like deer, turkey, and gopher tortoises. Bring binoculars — the birding is superb.

Little Talbot & Big Talbot Islands State Parks

Cold waters, coastal woodlands, and dramatic “Boneyard Beach” views — these islands offer a distinctive mix of shoreline solitude and wild landscapes. Hiking, camping, fishing, and nature photography are all highlights here.

Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

A peaceful urban woodland in Arlington with about three miles of rustic trails winding past gardens, ponds, and wildlife. Great for easy morning walks, sketching sessions, or just getting away from city noise.

Must-See Attractions

Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens

A family favorite that continues to evolve. Alongside seeing rare and exotic animals, there are interactive exhibits, botanical displays, and plenty of shade. It’s a strong bet if the weather is warm or you want a full-day outing with varied experiences.

Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

Combines art, history, and riverside gardens in Riverside. Ideal when you want a slower pace — stroll the lawns, enjoy sculpture gardens, then pop inside for rotating art installations.

Riverside Arts Market (RAM)

Every Saturday, this is where locals gather. Held beneath the Fuller Warren Bridge, the market features crafts, local food, live music, and plenty of energy. Great way to spend a few hours outside, browsing and people-watching.

Weekend Ideas & How to Plan Them

Morning Nature Walks + Brunch

Start with a sunrise hike at the Arboretum or Betz-Tiger Point Preserve, then grab brunch in Riverside or Avondale. It’s a peaceful combo that lets you ease into the weekend.

Paddle & Picnic

Pack lunch and paddle at Julington-Durbin Creek or through the tidal creeks near Fort George Island Cultural State Park. Many spots offer canoe/kayak launches; picnic shelters usually nearby.

Beach Day with a Twist

Go early to Hanna Park or Huguenot Memorial Park to beat the crowd, swim or surf, then explore nearby trails in the afternoon. Don’t forget sun-protection and check tide schedules.

Stay Local & Stay Cool

If the sun’s blazing, specialty parks like Springfield Park, Friendship Fountain, or Losco Regional Park provide shade, splash pads, playgrounds, or boardwalks. Activities where green meets ease.

Tips Before You Go

  • Bring plenty of water, especially in wooded trails or exposed beach parts.
  • Check if a park or preserve charges entrance or camping fees.
  • Weather can shift quickly — bring light rain gear if rain is in the forecast.
  • Respect wildlife and stay on marked trails and boardwalks.
  • Many parks offer early-morning or late-afternoon serenity, often with cooler temps and fewer crowds.

Jacksonville has over 80,000 acres of parks and more than 400 public recreational spaces — so whatever kind of outdoor vibe you crave, there’s almost always an option. Happy exploring!
